Posh named a 2015 U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business Award winner

We’re proud to announce we won the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 2015 Blue Ribbon Small Business Award. It is the first step on the path to the Dream Big award—seven regional finalists will be announced March 18 and then the Dream Big Award winner will be announced at the America’s Small Business Summit in June.

We were recognized for our success, innovation, and contributions to economic growth and free enterprise. We are also the only small business from Washington to win!

There are 5 other contenders for the Northwest region, all Idaho businesses. We can’t wait for March 18 to find out how we did!

On Tuesday night four of us from Posh attended the Seattle Chamber of Commerce’s Restaurant After Hours event #RAH15. Amid smoked scallops, skewered shrimp, wild mushroom soup and whiskey milkshakes, we met a variety of Seattle business leaders from all over the map.

The event was at the Seattle Aquarium— the perfect size for over 800 attendees to mingle and network alongside the spindly starfish and jiggling jellyfish, and the glowing purple view of the Ferris wheel that would have impressed even the most cynical Seattleite. The event had leaders from big (The Seattle Times) to nonprofit (Open Arms) to small (Alabastro Photo), not to mention food and representatives from innumerable Seattle restaurants—Pyramid Alehouse, Palisade, Il Fornaio and Fremont Brewing were some of our favorites.

Unfortunately, Restaurant After Hours is only held once a year…we’re already salivating for next time!

'Seminar series: How to get hired at Amazon

Seminar series: How to get hired at Amazon

Our first in a series of recruiting seminars was a great success!

We hosted an Amazon recruiting seminar today with the help of Karen Van Liew-Creek from Lee Hecht Harrison/Microsoft Career Center and Chris Gootherts, a former Amazon recruiter. We shared tips and techniques for navigating the Amazon interview process and landing awesome positions, whether through a contract or FTE role. Our Talent Acquisition Director, Prerna Goja, also answered candidates’ most pressing questions about the world of Amazon.

Join us for our next Amazon recruiting seminar this Wednesday, January 28 at 4 p.m. to learn about these Amazon roles and how we can help you land them! Food and drink will be provided.

'Signs, designs, and wine

Signs, designs, and wine

Last week we attended the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s Toast of Seattle event. We arrived at the Top of the Hilton at 7:30am, and if the view of the water from our meeting room wasn’t enough, we were lucky enough to watch the sun rise, a rainbow appear, and the city awaken.

The toast had 91 attendees and was led by Jacqueline Ashwell of the Seattle Area National Park Sites—pretty cool for some of us who had never seen a ranger in uniform before, let alone one who had worked in Bush Alaska with grizzly bears.

After we feasted on cinnamon rolls and parfaits, but unfortunately no bacon, we were tasked to network. The speed-dating style networking the Chamber had planned for us was extremely fruitful—we met people from all across the Pacific Northwest:  banks, hotels, property management, photography, as well as signs, designs, and wine!

Attendees were rewarded for putting themselves out there—the first person to give a business card to the “mystery guest,” received a gift card to a local winery. The mystery guest was Jenn Banday from the Puget Sound Business Journal, who graciously offered more wine gift cards with a new subscription to PBSJ.

If your organization is not a member of the Chamber, look into it. They provide resources and tools for businesses small and large, and they are largest and most diverse business association in the Puget Sound region. We’re looking forward to their next event on February 10: Restaurant After Hours.

'How to keep your 2015 New Year’s Resolution

How to keep your 2015 New Year’s Resolution

It’s that time of year again.

The gyms are full to bursting, the aisles of Whole Foods are packed, and professional development workshops are standing room only. It’s the New Year, and people want to improve their lives with New Year’s resolutions.

We all know that come February, most everyone has given up. But not Posh…not this year! We’ve got actionable goals around here, so here are a few tips from the team on how to stick to yours.

Tell your friends
And your mother, your coworkers, your kids, your Uber driver and your barista, because they’ll hold you accountable. Or at least they’ll guilt you for breaking your resolution, even if it’s with a judgmental sidelong glance. The more people who know you’ve decided to go dairy-free, the more often you’ll be embarrassed to be caught sneaking shredded cheese straight from the bag.

Pick one
Are you going to start working out, call your mom every week, learn Ruby on Rails, and try to reach 1,500 LinkedIn connections? No you aren’t. Trying to improve your whole life at once is unrealistic. If you’re feeling ambitious, consider making one personal and one professional resolution.

Don’t call it a new year’s resolution
The phrase is loaded with predetermined failure. It’s 2014 2015 and we’ve all had enough experience and read enough LinkedIn listicles to know it’s unlikely we’ll keep our “new year’s resolutions.” Try telling yourself it’s your plan, your goal, your 2015 strategy, or the new you.

'Do good and feel good!

Do good and feel good!

This year, Posh donated a total of 104 cans and 40 boxes of food to Redmond Hopelink. We fed 8 families in need for Thanksgiving!! Posh thanks its generous team for their selfless donations of money and time for prep work.

There’s still time for YOU to donate! Visit Hopelink or your preferred organization to see what they need to feed families on Thanksgiving. Even if you don’t have much to offer, any amount helps– and these organizations always need people’s time, so don’t be afraid to spend a weekend day volunteering.

Although perhaps we’ll never be as generous as Mother Teresa (she did win a Nobel Peace Prize), we can learn from her words about generosity: “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”

'Posh shortlisted for The Appsters Best Use of API 2014

Posh shortlisted for The Appsters Best Use of API 2014

On October 3, Posh was shortlisted for The Appsters Best Use of API Award 2014 for our ground-breaking flydubai app. The annual Appster awards are a must-attend for the who’s who in the world of apps. The award winners are decided by a judging panel of independent experts, delivering plaudits to worthy winners across key categories. Best Use of API is awarded to those whose API stands out from the crowd—APIs represent the building blocks of software, with many companies opting to create their own for greater flexibility.

Flydubai is one of Dubai’s largest domestic airlines, but it didn’t have a consistent technology platform for its operations, and the check-in process was slow and inefficient. Posh developed the flydubai Line-Buster application which cut down passenger check-in time and demonstrated the power of Windows 8.

In addition to the promise, the Line-Buster application provided above and beyond results:

  • A decrease of passenger check-in line waiting time
  • Experienced an indirect sales boost
  • Increased employee satisfaction and customer service engagement
  • An increase in customer satisfaction
  • Savings on employee labor costs

We are proud to have made the Appsters shortlist, and the final awards will be announced on Wednesday, November 12th at the awards ceremony in London. Good luck to all other category finalists.

'Three tips for working as a team on a big project

Three tips for working as a team on a big project

Let’s talk about teamwork. Let’s talk about intense, cross-functional, hectic, late-night-pizza-ordering, enough-hours-to-count-a-double-shift-every-day-for-a-week-straight, million dollar project teamwork.

A team at Posh just worked on a potential million-dollar bid for one of our largest customers to help them increase engagement with their community. We only had two weeks to do it, and the final few days were chaotic to say the least. Below is what we found worked for our team in completing an exceptional bid.

1. Edit your own work.
Even if there is a person dedicated to editing and formatting the team’s work, you should still thoroughly edit your own work before submitting it. If some parts aren’t clear, your editor may not understand your meaning and could edit something incorrectly. The few minutes it takes you to review your work will save the editor time when he or she patches together the entire piece.

2. Respect internal deadlines.
Official deadlines are very serious. They exist for a reason, usually because if you don’t meet them, you lose money. Internal deadlines, set by your manager to ensure that the project stays on track, should be taken just as seriously. Your manager should set and strictly enforce internal deadlines right away to mitigate bottlenecks and stress, but also to set a precedent that these deadlines should be respected in the future.

3. Delegate clearly, but be flexible.
Raise your hand if you’ve been on a team where a simple task was assigned casually to the entire group rather than a specific person and the task never got done. This is common, and nobody’s really at fault except…everybody. As a manager, delegate the task to a specific person instead. As an employee, be willing to jump on that task. But take a look around and see if the delegation is working. Does that person have the right skill set for the task? Does that person have room on their plate?

4. (Bonus) Feed your soldiers.
This is a given, but be careful…Can Am Tandori pizza is spicier than their spicy buffalo wings. Seriously. Someone on the team actually had to go home because of it.
